If those elements aren’t in place it won’t swing and that is a fact. Now whether somebody wants to deal with that fact is another thing, but that is a fact. If spontaneity isn’t in place, if momentum isn’t in place, if combustion isn’t in place, it’s not gonna swing. But I figured out how to take those elements and use ‘em to, as far as I’m concerned—let me just say, I figured out how to take that essence of swing, and use it in another way, and figured out how to get an ensemble to swing in a totally different way.”
